ยโสธร เป็นจังหวัดที่มีประเพณีการปฏิบัติสืบเนื่องกันมาอย่างยาวนาน โดยเฉพาะประเพณีที่เกี่ยวข้องกับศาสนา ความเชื่อ และวิถีชีวิตของชาวยโสธร ซึ่งมีความเชื่อว่าโลกนั้นประกอบด้วย โลกมนุษย์ โลกเทวดา และโลกบาดาล โดยโลกมนุษย์อยู่ภายใต้อิทธิพลของโลกเทวดาซึ่งขาวอีสานเรียกเทวดาว่าพญาแถน ซึ่งพญาแถนมีอิทธิพลต่อ ฝน ฟ้า ลม หากมนุษย์ทำให้พญาแถนโปรดปรานหรือพอใจ ก็จะบันดาลให้ฝนตกต้องตามฤดูกาล จึงเกิดพิธีการบูชาพญาแถนโดยการใช้บั้งไฟ เพื่อแสดงการเคารพและเป็นการขอฝนจากพญาแถน อันเป็นที่มาของประเพณีบุญบั้งไฟจังหวัดยโสธรอันโด่งดัง
