"พิพิธภัณฑ์ศูนย์ถ่านหินลิกไนต์ศึกษา (เหมืองแม่เมาะ) เฉลิมพระเกียรติพระบาทสมเด็จพระปกเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว" จัดตั้งขึ้นโดยมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อเป็นการเทิดพระเกียรติให้กับพระบาทสมเด็จพระปกเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว (รัชกาลทึ่ 7) และเป็นการถ่ายทอดองค์ความรู้และประสบการณ์ด้านการทำเหมืองถ่านหินและการผลิตไฟฟ้าที่คำนึงถึงชุมชนและสิ่งแวดล้อม ผ่านสื่อนิทรรศการรูปแบบ Interactive ที่สนุกสนานและทันสมัย มุ่งสู่การเป็นแหล่งเรียนรู้ด้านพลังงานของประเทศไทยและของโลกเพื่อร่วมสร้างสังคมแห่งภูมิปัญญาด้านพลังงาน ตามเจตนารมย์ของการไฟฟ้าฝ่ายผลิตแห่งประเทศไทยที่จัดตั้งศูนย์การเรียนรู้ตามภูมิภาคต่าง ๆ เพื่อเกิดประโยชน์สูงสุดคืนสู่สังคม
