“ตะรุเตา” เป็นคำที่เพี้ยนมาจากคำว่า “ตะโล๊ะเตรา” ในภาษามลายู แปลว่า มีอ่าวมาก ตะรุเตาเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติที่อยู่ในทะเลอันดามัน บริเวณช่องแคบมะละกา มหาสมุทรอินเดีย ในท้องที่อำเภอเมืองจังหวัดสตูลด้านใต้ของเขตอุทยานแห่งชาติ ห่างจากชายแดนไทย-มาเลเซียเพียง 4.8 กิโลเมตร อุทยานแห่งชาติตะรุเตาเป็นสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวในความใฝ่ฝันของนักท่องเที่ยวทั่วไป เนื่องจากเป็นจุดรวมของความงามที่ธรรมชาติสร้างสรรค์ ทั้งบนเกาะและในน้ำ มีป่าที่อุดมสมบูรณ์เป็นที่อยู่อาศัยของสัตว์ป่านานาชนิดในน้ำก็งดงามด้วยกลุ่มปะการังหลากสีสวยสด จนเป็นที่กล่าวขวัญกันไปทั่วโลก ซึ่งประกอบด้วยเกาะน้อยใหญ่จำนวน 51 เกาะ รวมทั้งพื้นที่บนเกาะและทะเลประมาณ 931,250 ไร่ หรือ 1,490 ตารางกิโลเมตร

The word “Tarutao” was distorted from the word “Talo Trao” in Malay language meaning “a lot of bays”. The archipelago of Tarutao is situated in Malacca Strait of the Andaman Sea in Satun Province. It consists of 51 islands; seven of them are large islands, namely; Tarutao island, Adang island, Rawi island, Lipe island, Klang island ,Batuang island and Bissi island. With a total area of 1,490 sq.km., this archipelago was declared as a national park on April 19, 1974. Due to its ecological completeness and vast value for conservation efforts, the National Park was honored as an ASEAN Heritage Park on November 29, 1984.
